The legislation now goes to the desk of Gov. Ron DeSantis for his signature. The Governor is expected to sign the bill as he presented the measure to the legislature to address during its special session this week.
He also suggested recently that he wanted to remove Disney’s self governing status, saying he doesn’t “support special privileges in law just because a company is powerful.”
House lawmakers passed the bill 68-38 just one day after the Senate passed the measure 23-16. Democrats could be heard shouting in protest as the bill passed.
Disney’s Special Status allows them to self govern its Orlando-area theme park, and the revocation of that status could have huge tax implications.
Governor Desantis has been at odds with Disney after the Children’s company publicly stated they would do everything in their power to end the Parental Rights and Education Act. A Bill that Governor Desantis signed into law which prohibits the indoctrination of children in Kindergarten through third grade, with gender ideology and sexual orientation agendas.
Disney’s special district will be dissolved on June 1, 2023. That status allowed for Disney to collect taxes, provide emergency services, build new structures and pay impact fees for that construction without the approval of a local planning commission.
