The Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is working to defeat legislation that requires proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections.
Benson Calling the SAVE act a trick designed to block millions of people from casting their Ballots.
The SAVE act sets up different ways for voters to prove their citizenship. They can provide a birth certificate or passport – or in the case that the voters ID doesn’t match their birth certificate – they can provide additional documentation.
The SAVE act also requires states to remove noncitizens from their voter rolls registrations and impose civil and criminal penalties on election officials who register people to vote without proof of citizenship.
Benson, a former hate crimes investigator, says that by requiring proof of citizenship – people would lose their ability to register to vote online or by mail – and it would make elections much harder to hold.
She also claims that low-income earners, and minorities would be disenfranchised.
The SAVE ACT needs 7 Democrats to vote with all Republicans to pass in the Senate to make it to President Trump’s Desk.
Michigan recently discovered illegal votes, such as a Chinese national who voted last year. Their vote counted because there was no way to pull it back.
