Police had to use teargas on demonstrators in central Paris as protests in France turned to riots after President Emmanuel Macron was re-elected on Sunday.
Macron defeated Marine Le Pen in a runoff vote earlier on Sunday by winning a second five-year term and preventing a major shift in politics in the country.
Two people were killed in Pont-Neuf, in the centre of the city, just after midnight – hours after Macron won, when police opened fire on a car.
A third person, a passenger, was injured and taken to hospital.
Reports quoting an investigative source said: “A car came rushing towards police soon after midnight, and refused to stop. One of the police officers opened fire, killing two people and wounding a third.”
