Fast Fact: The last time law enforcement shot and k*lled a woman in Minneapolis – It was Justine Damond – a white woman who was k*lled by a Somali migrant officer. However, critics point out that no widespread protests erupted.
In 2017 – Damond, a 40-year-old engaged to be married, called 911 to report that she heard an assault taking place. When police arrived, Damond – who was unarmed and dressed in her pajamas, walked out to the responding officers.
That’s when Officer Mohamed Noor—a Somali migrant hired as part of efforts to diversify the force—shot and k*lled her.
Here are the Details:
Damond’ made two 911 calls reporting screams and potential distress in an alley behind her south Minneapolis residence.
Officers Noor and his partner arrived in a squad car with their body cameras turned off—a violation of department policy that raised immediate red flags about transparency.
According to investigative reports, a loud noise startled the officers as Damond approached the driver’s side window.
Noor, who was in the passenger seat, fired a single shot across his partner, hitting Damond in the abdomen.
She died at the scene.
Noor, who joined the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) in 2015 as its first Somali migrant officer in the Fifth Precinct, was later convicted of third-degree m*rder and second-degree manslaughter in 2019.
He served 3 years for her m*rder.
Prosecutors argued Noor acted with a “depraved mind” and showed indifference to human life.
Critics pointed to Noor’s hiring as part of diversity initiatives under Democrat leadership putting the public in danger.
