A Nevada Sheriff is being praised for refusing to release a convicted felon with 35 arrests – despite a liberal judge ordering his release.
Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill has been ignoring a court order to release a convicted felon on GPS monitoring, Joshua Sanchez-Lopez saying he poses too great a risk to the community.
Sanchez-Lopez’s rap sheet:
35 arrests including drug-related offenses and violent crimes.
Prior prison time for drug charges and
Manslaughter in Nye County.
There’s also a 2020 incident where he led police on a high-speed chase, then bragged about it on Snapchat saying he was wearing an ankle monitor during the chase.
In addition, he has recent charges of selling drugs from his home and accessing firearms.
McMahall initially made the refusal in January after 36-year-old Sanchez-Lopez was arrested on a warrant for “grand larceny of a motor vehicle.”
Las Vegas Justice Court Judge Eric Goodman, who is criticized for being a liberal judge, set bail at $25,000 with electronic monitoring.
Sanchez-Lopez posted bond, but Sheriff McMahill wouldn’t release him, saying that his criminal history made him too dangerous for supervised release.
Goodman doubled down last month issuing a second order to release Sanchez-Lopez immediately and threatened McMahill and the LVMPD with contempt if they failed to comply.
McMahill’s office then sent a petition to the Nevada Supreme Court this month seeking a writ of prohibition to stop the Judges overreach.
In a statement, LVMPD said,
“The safety of our officers is paramount,”
“The safety of the public is key, and Sheriff McMahill will not violate the law to appease the Las Vegas Justice Court and let out people who he deems to be dangerous.”
