Janet Bewley, Wisconsin Senate Democratic Minority Leader, killed A mother from Pennsylvania and her 5-year-old daughter in a car crash a day after she reportedly had surgery for cataracts.
Ashland Police Chief Bill Hagstrom said that 70-year-old Sen. Bewley was not injured in the fatal crash.
Police say that Sen. Bewley pulled out of a Lake Superior beach entrance and into the path of of a vehicle driven by Alyssa Ortman, which collided with Bewley’s car. After the collision Ortman’s car spun across Highway 2 and was hit by another vehicle driven by Jodi Munson.
Ortman – who was 27-years-old- had her five year old daughter in the car.
According to the Madison Journal Sentinel, Senator Bewley was on the phone with one of their staff members for a prearranged interview about the midterms. When Bewley stopped speaking mid-sentence, they said, the staff member asked her if she way okay, to which Bewley reportedly replied, “Yeah, I’m OK. This is not a good accident.:
As of Tuesday no charges have been filed, and the state patrol has indicated they are looking into how the crash happened,
“We’ll be sitting down with them and going over everything as far as determining how it all actually happened,” Hagstrom said, “Then we’ll forward everything to the district attorney for their review because it was a fatal accident.”
