Democrat Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz said she is shocked that migrants ‘poop’ where they brush their teeth at Alligator Alcatraz –
Schultz expressed her shock during a tour of the migrant detention center in the Everglades.
The facility, located at the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport, was built to support the mass deportation and can house up to 3,000 detainees, with plans to expand to 5,000.
Wasserman Schultz, along with other Democratic lawmakers, visited the site, and described the conditions as “appalling” and “vile.”
She specifically highlighted sanitation issues, stating that detainees “brush their teeth where they poop” due to the design of the units,
“They are essentially packed into cages, wall-to-wall humans, 32 detainees per cage”
She noted the “lack of privacy” in shared showers and the “inadequate food portions—small turkey and cheese sandwiches, apples, and chips for detainees”
Wasserman Schultz likened the facility to an “internment camp,” and called for its closure, citing overcrowding, heat, and unsanitary conditions.
Republican lawmakers, including State Senator Blaise Ingoglia, who toured the same day, countered that the facility was “clean and well-run,” dismissing Democratic criticisms as “political theater.”
