Dearborn’s top law enforcement official highlighting how the police force went from 3% Arabs to now 45% Arab / M*slims
Issa Shahin – was appointed to the position by Mayor Abdullah Hammoud in December 2021 and was speaking at an event focused on community diversity.
He started his remarks with the Arabic phrase then highlighted the growing Arab Muslim police force.
He described the change as a deliberate effort to “mirror the community,” noting that Dearborn’s population has become majority Arab with over 55% of residents identifying as Middle Eastern or North African in the 2023 U.S. Census.
In his words, the shift represents *progress* toward inclusivity.
Dearborn, is known as the “Arab capital of America.”
It was once a hub for *Ford* Motor Company workers and a symbol of Midwestern industry. However, the city has seen waves of immigration from Lebanon, Yemen, Iraq, and other M*slim-majority nations in recent years.
While early arrivals included Christian Arabs drawn to auto jobs, recent influxes are a M*slim majority, who have initiated a call to prayer broadcast publicly five times a day.
