A mother in Texas has filed a civil lawsuit against sporting goods giant Academy Sports for selling her daughter a gun that she ultimately used to kill herself.
The suit was filed in Travis County and the mother is asking for more than $1 million.
According to court documents, the mother is suing for gross negligence, negligent hiring, training and supervision, negligent entrustment. and negligence.
The lawsuit indicates that the daughter struggled with general anxiety disorder and bipolar disorder and claims that the daughter should not have been allowed to purchase the gun,
“Academy never should have sold her the firearm and ammunition, given the condition in which she presented that Friday night, intending to purchase a firearm even after the store had closed.”
The lawsuit is asking that evidence such as electronic image or information related to the incident, surveillance tapes, business records, audiotapes and investigation reports be preserved.
