Newsom approves $101M in Funding For Low-Income Apts In Wildfire Impacted Communities

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has unveiled  $101 million in funding for “multifamily low-income housing developments’ in multiple wildfire-impacted communities – with nearly half of the units to  be filled with homeless people,  and former inmates

Meaning the Governor of California is planning to build large low income apartment complexes where fires destroyed neighborhoods like in the Palisades, Eaton, and Hughes

While trying to correct an article exposing Gov. Gavin Newsom for his plans to replace single family homes that burned to the ground with low income housing developments – Newsom appeared to admit to the plan saying,

“This funding is not limited to the Palisades, it supports affordable housing in multiple wild-fire impacted communities”

The initiative is said to alleviate the housing crisis which displaced thousands of families across Pacific Palisades, Altadena, and Malibu.

The fires destroyed 6,000 – 7,000 structures/ homes but only about 100 permits to rebuild have been issued so far.

40% of the units must be filled with homeless people or people who have spent at least 15 days in jails, hospitals, prisons, or mental health facilities to qualify as Supportive Housing.

Scoring preferences are given to projects that are shovel-ready within 180 days, have local government funding commitments, and prioritize wildfire-displaced households.

The California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) will manage the funds, with applications opening July 21, and a deadline of August 21.

There is major local opposition, especially in the affluent Pacific Palisades area.

People say they are not happy with moving criminals and homeless people into their wealthy neighborhoods.

Many residents suspect the fires are being exploited to push urban redevelopment, with one controversial proposal involving a low-income apartment tower by a gas station owner whose property exploded during the fire.
