HUD Secretary Scott Turner announced that he will be demanding proof of citizenship for all section 8 tenants saying,
“No longer will illegal aliens be able to leave citizenship boxes blank or take advantage of HUD-funded housing, riding the coat tails of hardworking American citizens.”
The nationwide initiative, is to make sure that Section 8 housing and other HUD-funded programs are only being used by U.S. citizens, and reinforces President Trump’s Executive Order signed back in February.
The directive requires all Public Housing Authorities (PHAs) to conduct a 30-day audit of a residents’ legal status to verify citizenship or eligible immigration status.
The policy includes:
Requirement that PHAs provide detailed tenant information, including names, addresses, unit sizes, costs, and proof of citizenship.
Non-compliant PHAs risk losing federal funding
The data collected will be shared with DHS
Turner said the Biden administration “turned a blind eye” to illegal migrants accessing benefits.
Over 3.2 million households receive HUD funding (taxpayer dollars) each year at a cost of $45 billion.
