President Doanld Trump has canceled an additional $175 million in funding for Gov. Gavin Newsom’s failed high-speed rail project
The administration cited Newsom’s oversight and mismanagement of taxpayer dollars.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced the withdrawal targeting four specific initiatives, including track extensions, grade separations, design work, and a rail station
This latest cut follows the administration’s earlier termination of $4 billion in federal grants in July, saying its part of their plan to redirect resources away from what they call a “train to nowhere” and toward more viable infrastructure projects that deliver real results for Americans.
The project was initially set to cost $33 billion and be complete by 2020.
However, it skyrocketed to $128 billion for Phase One.
Not a single mile of high-speed track has been laid, and the system has transported exactly zero passengers to date.
In addition, the completion date on the project that started 17 years ago, has been delayed by 13 years to 2033
California democrats claim that the move to terminate funding is politically motivated calling it an “illegal, baseless attack.”
Newsom’s administration has already sued over the July $4 billion claw back and may file more lawsuits, something the administration says only reemphasizes the project’s reliance on federal bailouts rather than self-sustaining success.
