Ukrainian officials plan to investigate after shocking videos surfaced allegedly showing Ukrainians shooting and torturing Russian Prisoners.
In the videos, at least three Russian troops appear to have been shot and some have white bags on their heads.
One of the videos shared widely on social media appears to show a senior commander admitting to war crimes.
Oleksiy Arestovych, an adviser to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, said in a post on Telegram
“We take such cases extremely seriously…. There will be an investigation…. We do not torture POWs.”
He added that “every member of the defense forces will be told that such behavior is considered absolutely unacceptable, that it is a war crime.”
Valeriy Zaluzhniy, said in a statement on Facebook that members of the Ukrainian armed services “strictly adhere to the norms of international humanitarian law.”
The incident, which Arestovych did not directly confirm, allegedly happened in a village on the eastern outskirts of Kharkiv on March 25.
The contents of the video have not been independently verified.
Russia has also opened a criminal investigation into the “extreme cruelty” of Ukrainian “nationalists” in their treatment of Russian military captives.
