In a move that’s sparking backlash, Virginia Democrats pushed through new gun control measures that restrict citizens but don’t apply to them.
Critics say this is an example of democrat elitist hypocrites – where lawmakers keep their privileges while restricting everyone else.
The bill creates a new Class 4 misdemeanor for anyone who doesn’t store a handgun in a locked, hard-sided container, and out of plain view when leaving it in an unattended vehicle.
This rule applies to public highways, parking lots, and even commercial areas where the owner can’t keep an eye on their car.
Violators face fines and potential criminal records.
But tucked into the bill’s language on carrying firearms in restricted state areas like the Capitol, is a loophole:
“The provisions of this section shall not apply to any member of the General Assembly who leaves a handgun in an unattended motor vehicle….when such vehicle is parked in any parking structure reserved for members of the General Assembly”
Virginia’s Democratic majority, which regained full control of the General Assembly in 2025 has been advancing a slew of gun restrictions this session, reviving measures previously vetoed under former Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin.
For example:
Bans on carrying semi-automatic “assault ️firearms” in public spaces like streets, sidewalks, and parks
Prohibitions on new sales of certain semi-automatic rifles, pistols, and shotguns, along with arbitrary limits on magazine capacities.
Expanded rules on ghost guns, concealed carry reciprocity with other states, and weapons in public venues.
