In a state that already has the nation’s highest gas taxes, California Democrats are advancing the controversial mileage tax proposal that critics say is a cash grab.
The plan, dubbed the “Road Charge,” will track every mile driven and charge motorists.
California’s gas tax is 61.2 cents per gallon, with total state taxes and fees pushing it to about 70.9 cents.
Conservatives point out the irony, Democrats have championed EVs to combat climate change, only to turn around and penalize drivers for not buying enough gas, with one GOP lawmaker saying,
“They force you into electric cars, then tax you for the miles anyway”
Privacy is also a concern with tracking methods like GPS devices or apps raising fears of government overreach.
