#new Mayor Jacob Frey ditched Memorial Day tributes for US service members, so he could honor George Floyd with city events that focused heavily on remembering the convicted criminal whose 2020 death sparked riots.
Frey posting,
“Today, we remember George Floyd, who was m*rdered by a former Minneapolis police officer six years ago.”
“That moment changed our city forever.”
He went on to say,
“It forced Minneapolis to confront painful truths about race, policing, inequity, and trust — and demanded hard conversations and accountability.”
About two months before he died, Floyd overd*sed and was hospitalized.
About a year before that he resisted arrest and put several opi*id pills plus c*caine in his mouth to hide them.
He showed signs of intoxication but didn’t fully overd*se.
According to court records and the official autopsy, Floyd had a “fatal level of fentn*yl in his system” on the day he died, but the medical examiner did not rule his death an overd*se.
Medical examiner’s own notes indicated that 11 nanograms per milliliter
“is a fatal level of fentnyl under normal circumstances” and “if he were found died at home alone… this could be acceptable to call an OD [overdse]. De*ths have been certified with levels of 3.”
Fentnyl intoxication and recent methmphetamine use are listed as “other significant conditions.” in his de*th
Meanwhile Mayor Frey – who shook and sobbed while kneeling at Floyds casket 6 years ago – hosted community events like the Rise & Remember Festival at George Floyd Square with brunches, vigils, flower ceremonies, and activism.
Frey’s office and statements have consistently called Floyd’s death a “m*rder” and supported ongoing memorials.
“The weight of what happened is still with our city six years later – and the responsibility to keep moving forward together is too.”
“I know we can keep building a Minneapolis that is safer, more accountable, and more worthy of the people who call it home.”
Memorial Day parades did happen in Minnesota, but Frey’s priority was the city’s heavy promotion of Floyd events
Critics say Frey panders to the large Somali-M*slim voting bloc to stay in power.
Minneapolis became the first major U.S. city to allow broadcast of all five daily Islamic calls to prayer after Frey signed the resolution.
He has spoken Somali in victory speeches, saying things like “We love you, we stand with you.”
Floyd events have heavy support from progressive and migrant communities, including Somalis.
Conservatives accuse Frey of elevating Floyd to signal loyalty to the left-leaning migrant and Black activist base that includes many Somalis
