#new Zohran Mamdani has released his plan to transfer property from owners to nonprofits (NGOs) and the ‘community’
“We are moving away from private ownership”
“If your landlord does not responsibly steward your home, city government will step in.”
Critics say the socialist mayor has started his move toward socialism, and ultimately communism with his “Block by Block” housing plan that was released today.
Mamdani says that the plan formalizes ways for the city to step in against “negligent” owners, using legal actions like foreclosure, acquisition, or debt control to shift properties away from private ownership.
Meaning – the city can classify any property as ‘negligent’ then take that property away from owners.
They’ll do this through:
Foreclosures,
By simply taking it,
By using code violation penalties (the city issues the violations)
Unpaid fines and other municipal debts to force a change in ownership.
The “Our Home” program is giving $75 million taxpayer dollars (in loans) to about 300 renters to buy their buildings and convert them to permanently affordable co-ops over two years.
The plan targets “chronically neglected buildings” with aggressive legal action to remove buildings from owners and transfer that ownership to nonprofits.
The plan is to build or acquire 400,000 affordable units over a decade with $22 billion in capital spending (tax dollars) , plus $5.6 billion NYCHA investment (tax dollars)
It pairs this with rent stabilization pushes and crackdowns on “bad landlords.”
