#new Senator John Thune was called out by President Donald Trump for not doing anything as Majority Leader – no SAVE Act, no recess appointments, and no codifying Trump Executive Orders.
President Trump is openly frustrated with Thune over the complete lack of recess appointments in his second term, and no progress on the SAVE Act.
Trump sent out a message with a graphic of the number of recess appointments for past presidents, showing he’s had zero because of Thune.
The post was captioned “Where is John Thune?”
As for recess appointments:
🔺️Ronald Reagan: 240 recess appointments
🔺️George H.W. Bush: 77 recess appointments
🔺️George W. Bush: 171 recess appointments
🔺️Donald Trump: 0 recess appointments (both in his first term and so far in the current term)
Leader Thune has made it a point to have pro forma sessions while the senate is at recess, to make sure that Trump cannot have any recess appointments.
These brief meetings keep the chamber technically in session and block the 10-day or longer recesses required for valid recess appointments.
Thune as majority leader controls the Senate schedule. He has the power to call a full recess that would open the door for the president to fill vacancies without full confirmation votes, or to continue the pro forma practice that prevents it.
