A trio of Senate Democrats introduce a new bill targeting the 2nd amendment. The strict legislation would require a person to obtain a 5-year federal license from the Department of Justice (DOJ) before purchasing a firearm and gives the government the power to confiscate a persons gun if that license is revoked for any reason.
Sens. Cory Booker (D-NJ), Bob Menendez (D-NJ), and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn) introduced the bill.
The Federal Firearm Licensing Act requires hands-on firearm safety training and passing a written test, completion of a criminal background check, fingerprint submission, proof of identity. Gun owners must also be 21 years or older.
Gun buyers must disclose “identifying information on the firearm that the person intends to obtain, including the make, model, and serial number, and the identity of the firearm seller or transferor.”
And the bill states that the license would “be valid for the purchase of a single firearm,” leaving one to question if the process must be complete for each new firearm purchase, or if only one license/ firearm is allowed per person.
In addition, the bill authorizes authorities to confiscate firearms if the gun owners license is revoked for any reason putting in place “Procedures to ensure that any firearm is removed from any individual when the individual’s license is revoked.”
A license can be revoked if a person has a “history of drug or alcohol abuse,” has “any recent acquisition of firearms, ammunition, or other deadly weapons,” or has a “history of unsafe storage or handling of firearms.”
The legislation also makes it illegal for “any individual to sell or otherwise dispose of a firearm to a person” unless the sale of the firearm is reported to the Attorney General.
