A 5-Year-Old Boy Survives Fatal Crash That Killed His Mother

An Indiana woman was killed and 5-year-old son was injured after single vehicle crash Thursday night near Cambridge City.

Sheriff Randy Retter, in a press release issued Friday, identified 29-year-old Ashley Barrett as the victim killed in the crash, adding that her 5-year-old son suffered minor injuries and was kept warm in a passerby’s vehicle until first responders arrived. The boy was taken to Reid Health Hospital for treatment, then was reunited with his father.

Barrett appeared to be wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, according to the first responding officers.

“The initial investigation revealed that Ms. Barrett was east bound on Boyd Road travelling at a high rate of speed. Her vehicle ran off the south side of Boyd Road then swerved back onto the roadway. Ms. Barrett appeared to overcorrect again causing her vehicle to go off the south side of Boyd Road where her vehicle began to roll before striking a large tree,” Retter stated.

“It is believed that speed and alcohol played a factor in the crash,” Retter continued.
