Investigators Christine Bash and John Stubbins filed an ethics complaint against Adam Schiff for committing fraud and perjury by listing his homes in California and Maryland as his primary residence.
The complaint said he listed both as such between 2002 and 2020, violating state and federal laws.
They alleged Schiff has been claiming dual primary residences for more than a decade, all while enjoying tax exemptions intended for homeowners.
Schiff has owned a spacious 3,420-square-foot home in Maryland for years yet has at the same time taken a homeowner’s tax exemption on his much smaller 650-square-foot condo in Burbank, California, designating it as his primary residence.
This maneuver resulted in a $7,000 reduction in property taxes for the congressman, they allege.
Deed records reveal that Schiff designated his Maryland property as his primary residence in 2003 when he purchased it for $870,000.
In 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012, Schiff refinanced his mortgage and consistently indicated the Maryland property as his primary residence.
Los Angeles County deed records for Schiff’s Burbank condo, purchased in 2009 for $298,000, raise eyebrows as they were notarized in Maryland.
Only one home can be considered a person’s primary residence, and for lawmakers that residence must be in the district they represent. For Schiff, that’s in California.
The complaint has been submitted to multiple US House agencies and, to the House judiciary, House ethics and House Oversight Committee.
He’s also being accused of committing voter fraud in California because throughout 2006 – 2009 his voter registration documents list his residence in Burbank.
