A Democrat governor has signed legislation approving abortion to the moment of birth in Massachusetts

Governor Maura Healey celebrated the move, with her allies excited about being able to end the life of a baby that is fully developed in the womb.

The legislation removes the state’s previous 24-week limit on abortions and allows the procedure at any stage of pregnancy, a change that permits abortions up to birth even on healthy, viable unborn babies.
The bill titled “An Act prioritizing patient access to care,” was signed in the governor’s ceremonial office at the State House in Boston.

It takes effect in 90 days.
Previous Massachusetts law restricted abortions at or after 6 months to cases necessary to:
🔷️Preserve the patient’s life,
🔷️Necessary to preserve the patient’s physical or mental health,
🔷️Warranted by a lethal fetal anomaly or diagnosis, or
🔷️Warranted by a grave fetal diagnosis
The new law strikes that framework and says that “an abortion may be performed by a physician based upon the professional judgment of the physician.”
It also bans any medical review process from overriding the treating physician’s judgment and the patient (or the patient’s health care proxy).
Healey framed the signing as resistance to President Donald Trump
“Abortion will remain safe, it will remain legal, and it will remain accessible here in Massachusetts.”
She told stories of
“pain and anguish and heartache” from families who had to leave the state for late stage abortions and said Massachusetts would continue protecting abortions
“No matter what President Donald Trump or Republicans in Congress or the Supreme Court does.”

🔸️Sleep-wake cycles are established, with periods of quiet sleep, active sleep, and wakefulness
🔸️All major organs and systems (heart, circulatory system, digestive tract, kidneys, etc.) are formed and capable of independent function outside the womb
🔸️The baby is fully formed, can hear, react, see and feel.
