#News Rep. Ilhan Omar has lawyered up with two of D.C.’s most expensive and connected attorneys – Amy Jeffress, former
President Joe Biden’s personal lawyer and the attorney who represented FBI lawyer Lisa Page, and Joshua Matz, who served as House Democrats’ counsel in both Trump impeachments – to fight a federal investigation into her immigration history.
Jeffress and Matz sent a seven-page letter to Justice Department prosecutors. They demanded the immediate return of all seized property and the preservation of all video and audio from the search.
They accused the government of violating the magistrate judge’s specific orders, which were designed to protect Omar’s legislative privileges under the Speech or Debate Clause. According to the letter:
Agents failed to notify both Omar and the House of Representatives Office of General Counsel before or at the start of the search.
They did not promptly provide Omar and her counsel with a copy of the warrant.
They blocked Omar from contacting her attorney for more than an hour after the search began.
A Justice Department spokesperson responded that the letter was “riddled with false allegations and inaccuracies” and that “our attorneys and law enforcement partners complied with all court orders and legal obligations, as they always do.”
The department also noted that leaking the letter to the press immediately after sending it was a publicity stunt rather than good-faith engagement.
These are not ordinary defense lawyers.

🔵Rank-and-file members of Congress earn a $174,000 salary.
🔵Omar’s campaign immediately began fundraising off the search. An ActBlue appeal sent the day after the raid asked supporters to “Stand with Ilhan Omar” and framed the action as an extreme abuse of power.
Do you think a sitting member of Congress should be able to use campaign donations to hire high priced attorneys to fight a criminal investigation into her own immigration history?
Critics point out that Omar once said “no-one is above the law’,” but now she’s fighting an investigation because she feels that she is above the law.
