Black woman and ordering fried chicken. Critics say it’s a poor attempt at trying to prove he’s not racist – by actually coming off as racist.
This comes after his late-night gas station stunt where he ate spicy snacks and drank Gatorade while trying to engage with Black people.
Recent polling shows that El-Sayed is underperforming with Black voters, with Republicans saying it must be abysmal considering the polls are skewed heavily in his favor.
Despite polls showing that El-Sayed would win the primary by 20 points, he narrowly won by 1 point, with Haley Stevens (White) outperforming El-Sayed by an average of eight points in counties where Black residents make up 15% or more of the population.
Black voters in Detroit say they feel taken for granted by Democrats. They have also raised complaints that Arabs are taking over their neighborhoods, and that their ownership of gas stations and corner stores take money out of the Black communities while treating Black customers poorly.
Many claim that Arabs are racist against Blacks.
El-Sayed says those types of Arabs aren’t like him, because he’s “Arab, but also African” since his family came from Egypt, and that he’s not like the “gas station Abdul” who holds racist views or treats women poorly.
Does ordering fried chicken with a Black voter, and eating spicy snacks at a gas station late at night make you less racist? Or does it just look like you think Black voters are so stupid that they will fall for the pandering and vote for you?
