Meta is threatening to shut down services in the entire state of New Mexico if the judge orders the requirements demanded by the Attorney General Raul Torrez to be implemented saying they are not only impractical, but nearly impossible
Meta revealing in court that the requirements the state is demanding aren’t just the age restriction, and ending infinite scrolling as presented by New Mexico, but actually include 7 pages of requirements, including a monitor who would be able to change or add requirements on the fly.
Alex Parkinson saying that the state is asking the court to make unprecedented decisions that would not only be the first of its kind in New Mexico but across the nation.
And that the requirements so exhaustive and impractical that if ordered by the court, Meta would have to shut down services in the state.
Parkinson revealed that in the 7 pages of new requirements, included one that would allow researchers to scrape individual user data, of all users, which has nothing to do with child safety.
He said that the state has not shown if and how the requirements would work to solve the issue and has offered no proof that a single requirement is tied to any wrongdoing.
Parkinson pointed out that the state wanted a 99% accuracy rate when it came to keeping kids under 13 off the platform, (something they tried to do for four years) wants Meta to build view only versions for New Mexico and wants to mandate specific controls
Parkinson then said that if the court were to order injunctions – which they don’t think are necessary – they’ve proposed a specific list of alternative relief that would address the concerns even saying Meta will fund training, and independent audits.
