An ‘overwhelming’ amount of people showed up to the Sacramento California Police Department to take part in the “Gas for Guns Buyback” program that offers a $50 gas gift cards per firearm. The event was scheduled to run for five hours, however so many people showed up that they ran out of gift cards in 45 minutes.
134 firearms were traded in including at least one assault weapon, numerous components for “ghost guns” and multiple illegally configured firearms, police said in a statement on Sunday.
The SPD required people to show up at the police department with the unloaded fire arm in the trunk. People were not required go give their identities to police.
Sacramento Police Chief Kathy Lester said,
“As a department, we will continue to use innovative ideas to increase the safety of our community. I truly believe violent crime prevention is a shared responsibility and today’s overwhelming community participation is evidence of the success we can achieve together.”
According to AAA the average price per gallon in California is more than $6.00 – nationwide the average is a record high $4.59 a gallon with no signs of slowing.
Experts believe the price per gallon can top $10 a gallon in some states this summer. Many blame Joe Biden for the rise in gas prices – that started to skyrocket months after he took office – due to his war on American energy, decision to cancel the XL Pipeline, cancel oil leases on Federal lands, cancel offshore drilling in the Gulf and Alaska and tap into the Strategic Oil Reserves to send that oil to Europe.
