#new Pressure is growing to remove Senate Majority Leader John Thune after he effectively k*lled the SAVE Act in the Senate, with many saying Thune feels he has more important issues to focus on, than election integrity
Ana Paulina-Luna putting Thune on blast saying,
“Just so America knows, after two weeks in recess John Thune is no longer considering the SAVE America Act”
The election integrity bill would require proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote and a photo ID to cast a ballot in federal elections.
The legislation, which passed the House months ago and is backed by President Trump now sits stalled on the Senate floor with no realistic path to passage.
The bill needs 60 votes to advance, and Thune refuses to nuke the filibuster to force a final vote.
Many are now accusing Thune of being part of the ‘Swamp’ and ‘the establishment’ instead of taking action on election integrity.
They point out that over 83% of Americans support voter ID – both Democrat and Republican – but GOP leadership has refused to use every tool available, like changing the 60-vote threshold to get it passed.
Pressure is now growing in Republican circles to replace Thune as Senate leader, and several members of congress have started talking about new leadership saying Thune is putting procedural niceties ahead of the American mandate.
House Republicans and Trump allies have openly criticized his handling of both the SAVE America Act and the recent DHS funding standoff.
Fast Facts about Thune:
During Senate recesses, Thune kept the Senate in pro forma sessions so Trump could not make any temporary / recess appointments.
Trump became the first president in U.S. history with zero recess appointments while Republicans controlled the Senate.
A partial shutdown of the DHS dragged on for more than 60 days earlier this year.
The Senate initially passed a funding bill that left out ICE and CBP.
House Republicans rejected it.
Only in early April did Thune and House Speaker Mike Johnson announce a plan to fund those agencies through regular appropriations and budget reconciliation.
Trump and conservatives have pressed Thune to eliminate or work around the filibuster so the SAVE America Act could pass with a simple majority.
But Thune repeatedly refused saying the votes simply were not there and that changing the rules would have “unintended consequences.”
