Asad, who has eight kids, said,
“We strongly condemn gun violence and youth violence. We recognize that Somali American youth were involved, and those responsible must be held accountable. Critics say that Fletcher is still trying to defend the Somali community saying Critics say Fletcher is still defending the community by calling 300 ‘a small number’ and slam him for sending letters asking criminals not to commit crimes rather than arresting the criminals. They also point to his plan of just arresting some of the criminals in the hope that the crime will stop. His plan: arrest 50 of the 300, send 25 of those to federal prosecutors on racketeering charges, and prosecute another 25 locally. “Take 50 of the most active out of the mix, and we will see dramatic changes,” he said. He also warned that if these crews move into drugs and money, “we’re in trouble.” He blamed weak charging across the river and called out Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty by name. Ramsey County Deputy Jama Shine said “We do have a gang problem. We do have a Somali gang problem, and we know who these kids are. We know their parents. We know where they live.”
