Manhunt Underway: Convicted Murderer Escapes After Stabbing Correctional Officer

A manhunt is underway after a convicted murderer escaped in Texas after stabbing a correctional officer driving a prison bus in rural Leon County, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Police are now searching for -year-old Gonzalo Lopez who is currently serving a life sentence for capital murder and attempted murder.

Authorities say Lopez broke free from his restraints, approached the driver and stabbed the driver with some type of object.

Lopez managed to get free of his restraints and enter the driver’s area, where he stabbed the driver in the hand with some type of object.

Agency spokesman Robert Hurst detailed the incident,

“During the struggle, the bus went off the roadway. When it went off of the roadway, that’s when the inmate went out the door and started fleeing across the pasture.”

Hurst said that  the bus crashed on Texas State Highway 7 about a mile and a half from Centerville.
