Number Of Americans Who Believe In God Drops To Historic Low, Gallup Poll

The number of adults in the United States that believe in God has reached a new all-time low, according to a poll conducted by Gallup.

The Values and Beliefs poll indicates that while the vast majority of Americans (81%) say they believe in God, the number of people who don’t has dropped by 6% making the total percentage of people who do not believe in God in the U.S. 17%.

Between 1944 and 2011, more than 90% of Americans believed in God. That number staying at about 98% through the 1960’s, then dipping to 92% in 2011, dropping another 3% in 2013 and now, in 2022, sinking to 81%.

According to the poll, younger and more liberal or democrat Americans are the least likely to believe in God.

These groups show drops of 10% or more.

The groups with the largest declines are also the groups that are currently least likely to believe in God, including liberals (62%), young adults (68%) and Democrats (72%). Belief in God is highest among political conservatives (94%) and Republicans (92%), reflecting that religiosity is a major determinant of political divisions in the U.S.
