At Least 4 Killed, 47 Shot In Weekend Of Violence In Lori Lightfoot’s Chicago

At least four people were killed and 47 others shot in a weekend of violence in Mayor Lori LIghtfoot’s city of Chicago.

According to the Chicago Police Department, 13 people were just in a five-hour stretch from late Sunday night into the early morning hours of Monday.

Of them an 11-year-old girl who was shot in the leg just after midnight. About half a mile away and ten minutes later two teenagers and a woman were shot.

Police also said that five people were injured in a mass shooting that happened Friday evening when a gunman opened fire in a parking lot.

The four people that were killed include a 30-year-old man who was sitting on his porch when he was gunned down, a 40-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman who were shot in the head while walking on the sidewalk in separate incidents on the South side and a 22-year old who was killed in a drive-by shooting.

The details of the four fatal incidents were posted by the Sun-Times Media Wire:

  • Sunday night, a 36-year-old woman was fatally shot in West Englewood on the South Side. She was on a sidewalk about 8:30 p.m. in the 6400 block of South Marshfield Avenue when someone opened fire, striking her in the head, Chicago police said. The woman was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

  • Earlier Sunday, a man was killed in Englewood on the South Side. Officers found the 40-year-old on a sidewalk with gunshot wounds to his head and body in the 700 block of West 73rd Street around 3:35 a.m., police said. Paramedics took him to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police reported no arrests.

  • Friday night, a man was killed in a drive-by shooting on the Near West Side. The 22-year-old was sitting in a vehicle around 11:45 p.m. when a red car drove by and someone from inside fired shots in the 2300 block of West Harrison Street, police said. He was shot in the back and was taken to Stroger Hospital where he died.

Many are blaming Mayor Lightfoot and Governor JB Pritzker for their soft on crime approach as the reason for the continued skyrocketing crime rate in the city. This year Chicago has seen a 36% increase in crime.

According to police data through March 27, burglaries are up 36%, thefts jumped by 70% and car-jackings spiked 43%.

Chicago has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the nation.

according to Jody Madeira, a law professor at Indiana University Bloomington background checks and permits are required to purchase a firearm in Illinois. Ghost guns are banned and in Cook County, which includes the city of Chicago, guns considered to be assault weapons are also banned.
