Richmond, Indiana police officer Seara Burton was supposed to be getting married but instead, she is in critical condition at a hospital in Ohio after she was shot in the head during a routine traffic stop two weeks ago.
Richmond Police Chief Michael Britt gave an exclusive interview with News Center 7 and revealed that Friday, August 19th was Burton’s scheduled wedding day,
“I prefer to think of it as even though today was her wedding day, she went through a terrible event and she’s still with us,” Britt said. “That in itself is plenty to be thankful for. The important thing to remember is the wedding is probably not going to take place today, but that love is still in place and her fiancée is by her side continually.”
According to News Center 7, Burton’s fiancée was doing a ride-along in the car and witnessed Burton get shot,
“Seara’s injury was traumatic, but there’s other trauma that goes along with this….It was a terrible thing to deal with.”
Burton remains hospitalized in critical condition.
The man accused of shooting Burton, Phillip Lee, appeared in court virtually from his hospital bed on Friday.
He was released from prison on December 31, 2021 and out on parole when he allegedly shot Burton.
In his court appearance, Lee was told he will be going straight to a prison facility in Indiana before he goes to trial.
Lee’s bond was set at $1.5 million because of his lengthy criminal history – he’s been to prison five times – and the “gravity of the charges” against him.
