#new Zohran Mamdani’s ‘Director of the Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants ‘wants to use $2.2 billion tax dollars to take housing from private landlords.
Cea Weaver, who said home ownership is a weapon of White supremacy, is moving ahead with policies that will use billions to transfer ownership of “distressed” rental properties away from private landlords and into tenant groups, NGOs, and community land trusts. Critics say that Mamdani and Weaver are working in tandem, Mamdani pushes out landlords with sky high tax increases, while Weaver swoops in and collects the properties for government ‘community’ ownership. In 2019, she posted about how home ownership was racial oppression.
In one now deleted post, she said that private property, “including and kind of ESPECIALLY homeownership,” functions as “a weapon of White supremacy masquerading as ‘wealth building’ public policy.” Other earlier posts called for seizing private property and talked about impoverishing the white middle class. She was criticized, including by former Mayor Eric Adams for views that reflect “extreme privilege and total detachment from reality” and that calling homeownership White supremacy requires being “completely out of your f****ing mind.”
When she was confronted after he comments went public, and asked questions about her family’s ownership of a $1.6 million home in Tennessee, she broke down in tears and ran away. The funding mechanism at the center of her housing transfers sits inside Mamdani’s “Block by Block” housing plan, released in May.
That plan commits more than $22 billion overall for housing over five years, including more than $2 billion in capital funds routed through the Department of Housing Preservation and Development for ownership transfers and related enforcement. #ChristinaAguayoNews
