The three young children, a 3-month-old, 4-year-old and a 7-year-old were found unconscious in Brooklyn’s Coney Island and later died, while their mother was discovered shoeless 2 miles away on the boardwalk.
Authorities say the mother is being questioned.
Police say that that a concerned family member called 911 at about 1:40 a.m. saying they were scared the 30-year-old mother would hurt her children. When officers arrived at the family’s Neptune Avenue apartment, a man who said he was the children’s father told police he thought the mother and children were on the boardwalk.
Officials then launched a full-scale search with officers canvassing the boardwalk, beach, streets and local hospitals.
After about an hour and a half, a second 911 call led police to a different area of the boardwalk where they found the woman along with other relatives – but no children.
According to reports, Chief Kenneth Corey said the woman was found barefoot and ‘soaking wet’ but officers did not know if she was in the water or was wet from the rain.
The three children, a 3-month old girl, a 4-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy were found unconscious at the edge of the water about 2 miles away at 4:45 a.m.
The children were taken to a hospital where they were pronounced dead.
The case is being investigated as a triple drowning.
