CHICAGO – A U.S. marshal and his police dog were shot during a shootout between officers and two gunmen Thursday afternoon on Chicago’s Northwest Side, authorities said.
The officer, who is with the U.S. Marshals Service’s fugitive apprehension team, was serving a warrant to 19-year-old Tarrion Johnson for an attempted murder charge -information revealed by prosecutors during Johnson’s court appearance on Saturday.
According to a Chicago Fire Department spokesman, after the shooting that happened around 1:20 p.m., the marshal rushed his injured K-9 partner to a veterinary clinic. The marshal then realized he had been shot in his hand and called for an ambulance.
The U.S. Marshals Service said the police dog was in the intensive care unit of an emergency veterinary hospital however the condition of the dog -or officer – and further details about the shooting were not immediately released.
Johnson is being charged with attempted murder, attempted robbery with a firearm, aggravated cruelty to animals and injury to a police anima. He has been denied bail.
