Attorneys for Steve Bannon, former Donald Trump adviser, are issuing subpoenas for Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and every member of the January 6 committee in a legal challenge related to his upcoming trial.
Bannon was indicted for contempt of Congress after refusing to testify about communication he may have had with Trump before the protest at the Capitol, and failing to provide requested documentation – Something Bannon said he would have done if ordered by a judge to do so.
Now, Bannon’s legal team wants Pelosi and other lawmakers to testify under oath about whether or not Pelosi violated House rules in forming the committee that they claim is bipartisan. House rules say that the committee is to have 13 members, however, the panel only has nine.
And while the committee has seven Democrats and two Republicans, they were all selected by Pelosi. The speaker was quick to select well-known RINO’s Liz Cheney and Adam D. Kinzinger – both vocal opponents of Trump and advocated for his impeachment.
Furthermore, according to House rules, House Minority leader Kevin McCarthy was supposed to participate in the forming of the committee and select a ranking minority member, something Bannon’s attorneys say didn’t happen.
McCarthy did nominate Republicans to the committee, but after Pelosi refused to seat Representatives Jim Jordan of Ohio and Jim Banks of Indiana, McCarthy pulled all five of his picks. Bannon’s attorneys argue that the composition of the committee is invalid and that seating Cheney as a “ranking minority member” isn’t valid either.
In addition, Bannon’s attorneys claim that the documents that Bannon wants belong to the American people, and not to the committee itself.
