Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts handed President Donald Trump a victory by ruling that for the time being, Trump does not have to turn his tax records over the Democrats demanding them on the House Ways and Means Committee.
Chief Justice Roberts’ order states,
“Upon consideration of the application of counsel for the applicants, it is so ordered that the mandate of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, case No. 21-5289, is hereby stayed pending further order of the undersigned or of the court.”
The Chief Justice then requested the committee respond before noon on Thursday, Nov. 10.
Trump asked the Supreme Court to block the release of his tax records on Monday.
As part of what Trump calls a witch-hunt, Democrats demanded to see six years of Trump’s tax returns back in 2019. In 2021, Biden’s DOJ said that congress should have access to those records, a decision Trump appealed.
U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden ruled that the Treasury Department should turn over Trump’s tax records to the congressional committee, a decision upheld by the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals.
