Members of the People’s Convoy, who traveled from California to Washington D.C. to fight for freedom, are suing D.C. because they say their First Amendment rights were violated.
According to court documents, more than 12 plaintiffs say that their rights were violated when police physically blocked the entry ways leading into D.C. The complaint was filed Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia
According to the complaint, the D.C.’s Metro Police Department, “formed the blockades for the sole purpose of preventing American citizens from entering our nation’s capital to exercise their constitutionally protected right to free speech.”
The complaint says that two people, who crashed their vehicles into the blockades, died.
The People’s convoy was sparked by the Truckers Convoy in Canada that was protesting restrictions and mandates related to Covid, including a mandate that all truckers must get vaccinated if they were going to cross the border for business purposes.
The liberal Mayor of D.C. issued an emergency declaration and reached out for National Guard support as a knee jerk reaction to the peaceful protest that showcased hundreds of trucks that circled around the beltway earlier this year.
